Celebrating the Rich Heritage of Nkporo

Nkporo - A Legacy of Strength and Unity

Experience the Spirit of Nkporo

The Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia's father's name was originally, Chief Oko Agbo and one might be tempted to ask, "why the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia (Ogbudibia) was not called Chief Obasi Oko. The truth of the matter was that, in the days of our forefathers, names were given based on people's achievements or exploits. It was on the basis of that, that the late father of Chief Obasi Ogbuabia was given the name  "Ogbuabia" (Ogbudibia) based on his act of bravery. Back to the Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia (aka Jack Ekpe),who was the first son of the Union between his father, the Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia Agbo and his mother, the Late Mrs Ejah Obasi Ogbuabia. As was the case during their days, those who were loved by their parents were not sent to school, to avoid punishment by their teachers who were disciplinarians. Because of the love the parents had for him, he did not receive formal education, though he just had little stint in the primary school. However, the Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia was endowed with great wisdom, knowledge and discipline which stood him out all through his life. His was a man of high integrity.

EARLY LIFE
The Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia was so loved by his father that he didn't allow him to travel  to the township with anyone for the purpose of apprenticeship FARMING/TRADING ACTIVITIES

He learnt farming occupation from his father from the early stages of his life. He eventually became a farmer which he later combined with trading activities. He later became a shrewd businessman/farmer and was very successful. With the help of his many wives and children, he cultivated large farmlands annually and had large Barn.
The children remember with nostalgia how on farm days, their late father, Chief Obasi Ogbuabia would leave early to farm with his hired workers and when the day broke, the wives would prepare morning food and carry to meet them in the farm.
The children, on farm days would meet their parents at the farm after school during school sessions, but during the holidays, they would gladly go to the farm with their parents from the morning hours.
On various occasions, the younger sisters of the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia would accompany him to his farms with their children and that provided a large number of workers and no wonder the Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia was a very successful farmer/trader. Because of the matrilineal system of Nkporo people, the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia enjoyed the full support of his siblings and family members all through his life. This was followed by the reciprocal action of paying the tuition fees of his cousins. We recall with nostalgia, how the children of his siblings would come to meet our late father each time they were sent home from school for non-payment of their  tuition fees. Each time those his cousins were sent home from school for non-payment of their  tuition, their fathers would always tell them to go and meet their uncle, that is, the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia. On each of such occasions, the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia would gladly raise money to give them for them to go back to school and pay their tuition, after the payment of tuition for his own childred.
On market days, his children before going to school would carry some of their father's goods to drop for him at his shade in the market while the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia would use his bicycle to carry the remaining goods to the shade for the day's business. In the evening at the close of business activities, the children would go in turns to carry their father's goods back to the main store in their father's house after the close of school.
Though the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia lived in the village where he carried out both his farming and trading activities, he, however, traveled out to Aba at intervals to buy his goods.
The children recall a day when their, the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia was returning from farm. According to him, he met one of his Age mates and who was also a member of the Etitiama Nkporo Council of Chiefs'. He greeted this man and the man told him blatantly to stop greeting him that they were not in good terms. The late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia responded by saying that he never knew  they were not in good terms.

FAMILY LIFE
The Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia, just like his father, was a polygamist. He married his first wife by name Miss Ibuo Imo who became Mrs Ibuo Obasi Ogbuabia. Painfully, the first wife died immediately after the birth of her first and only child, female from the Union. The Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia had to marry another wife after recovering from the shock of the loss of his first wife, by name Miss Huoma Okogbu, and who later became Mrs Huoma Obasi Ogbuabia. This particular marriage produced two children, a boy and a girl. This particular marriage didn't last long and they got divorced.
The Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia later married four other wives - Otutu Ogbu (Grace), Fani, Mercy and Mienna who lived with him till the time of his death. He left behind many children and grandchildren.

SOCIAL LIFE
The Late Chief Obasi Oguabia was a moralist and never compromised his belief in the truth, no matter the situation. As a member of Etitiama Nkporo Rulers' Council,  he was severally wooed and even threatened to join the notorious "Ufie Ufie" Cult, but he blatantly refused and held on to his belief in doing the right thing. As a result of his life of transparency, some of his colleagues in the Ruling Council hated him. He was almost a "Life Treasurer" of Etitiama Nkporo Community. He held the position of Etitiama Nkporo Community Treasurer for over Twenty-five years and was never found wanting. For the whole period that he was the Treasurer, banking activities in the village werevstill not in place and so, all the money of the Etitiama Nkporo Community was in his custody. On few occasions, some members of the Ruling Council would want him to give them loan from the money in his possession and he refused. At other occasions, some persons would want him to bring part of the money for them to share and he refused. On several occasions when he traveled to Aba to buy goods and return with a Lorry load of goods, some members of the Ruling Council would think that he used the community money to buy goods and they instigated the other members of Council to come and ask for their money from the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia. They would just come and feign to have a need for money and requested him to bring the money that they needed it. The late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia would calmly go into his room and bring the money the same way it was wrapped and given to him. The main reason in those occasions why they came for their money was that they were looking for a way to indict him and probably thought that he was using their money to trade. After few occasions of this embarrassment, they couldn't find anything to indict him and they became frustrated.  The Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia and his family felt insulted and requested them to take back their money and look for another Treasurer. It was a big case and they had to apologize to the Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia with a 'he' goat.  Thereafter, he accepted to continue to be the Treasurer and he held the position till his death in January, 1987.
The Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia was generous and kind and many people confessed after his death that he lent money to them during his life time without asking for interest.

AGE GRADE ACTIVITIES
The late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia was a member of the renowned "Lever Age Grade" of Etitiama Nkporo Community. The Age Grade had men and women of calibre, including the late Barrister U O Agwu, the first indigenous Lawyer of Etitiama Nkporo Community trained abroad by communal efforts.

JOURNEY TO DEATH:
Like a dream, the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia went for the Council of Chiefs' meeting of Etitiama Nkporo Development Board, as it was then called, on a Sunday evening, 4th January, 1987 just like every other meeting day. Unknown to him, there was an arrangement by those who wanted to get rid of him to poison him. Like earlier stated, he was not the kind of  man known for drinking alcohol hol and the perpetrators of the evil plan knew that. So, since he could not be poisoned through drinks, they planned to poison him using meat which he could eat. It was arranged by those evil men that the man sharing the meat would put poison on one of his fingers while sharing the meat and when it became the turn of the Late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia to be given, he would use the finger that he had put the poison to pick a piece of meat to give to the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia. That was exactly what the meat sharer did and they succeeded in giving poisoned meat to the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia. Coincidentally, the meeting was held in the house of the man who had earlier warned the late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia not to greet him again. The late Chief Obasi Ogbuabia received the meat and ate just like other days without knowing that it was poisoned. Shortly after eating the meat, he started having stomach disorders.
Not long he returned home after the meeting,  that he started to vomit.
He vomited all through the night while efforts were made to give him medical attention. In the following morning, drugs were bought for him when it was not known the actual cause of the vomiting. Monday ended and the following day being Tuesday, the 6th day of January, 1987, he was taken to Martha General Hospital, Afikpo in the present Ebonyi State.
The Doctors battled in vain to save his life as he died in the early morning of Wednesday, 7th January, 1987.
When the news of his death filtered into Etitiama Nkporo Community, the atmosphere changed and every where was like a ghost City.
However, his death was the death of a man that was known and seen to be good. A man generally known to be honest, transparent and of high level of integrity.
He was given the honour of being buried by Etitiama as a community. It should be placed on record that he remains the only man who was not an "Ezeogo" but was given a Community Burial by the Etitiama Nkporo Community. Again, all the eight villages of Nkporo participated in his burial.
To the glory of the Lord God Almighty, today, many of his children have taken his footsteps. Today, the children are all proud to stand up in Etitiama Nkporo to declare that they are Chief Jack Ekpe Ogbuabia's children to the shame of those that conspired and killed him.
Rest on, Papa Jack Ekpe Ogbuabia;
Rest on, the epitome of honesty, transparency and integrity;
Rest on, the big Umbrella of his family;
Rest on, the man they could not indict.
Be assured that the children you left behind and the entire Ogbudibia family are forever proud of you
